This class is all about giving yourself one hour to simply be YOU. With Valentine’s Day coming up it is important that we nurture the love we have (or try to have) for ourselves.
Sara will bring participants through a series of low-impact trauma-informed stretches and postures inspired by the ancient art and practice of Yoga, and designed to connect you to yourself in a compassionate way!
In the context of a movement class, trauma-informed means:
the facilitator will be using exclusively “invitational language” for all posture and stretches
the facilitator will provide modifications or other options for each posture and stretch
there is an emphasis on transparency whereby the facilitator is open and honest about her credentials as a trauma-informed yoga certified instructor with trainings in various therapeutic mind-body modalities such as polyvagal theory and sensorimotor psychotherapy.
there is also transparency in the structure of the class so that folks with trauma histories and/or neurodivergences can feel prepared for the sensory experience.
the music will be instrumental guitar at a medium volume
there will be soft lighting from lamps and a “sunset lamp”
there will be the smell of lavender present in the beginning of class from incense burned before class starts
the studio exits and bathrooms will be made clear and visible
there will be a focus on safety, empowerment, and choice whereby each participant is encouraged and asked to make decisions regarding each gentle posture or stretch themselves - whether they want to do it at all, modify it, or do another move!
This class pays deep respect to the land of yoga’s origin, India, while expressing great gratitude and respect for the opportunity to practice on the unceded and unsurrendered territory of the Wolastoqiyik, Mi’kmaq and Peskotomuhkati peoples.
